BREATH

KAREN MACHER NESTA – 2025

The artwork draws inspiration from the fundamental role of fungi in the forest ecosystem. These organisms, often invisible or overlooked, perform a vital function: they decompose organic matter, recycle nutrients, and make them accessible to other living beings, thus contributing to the cycle of life and the health of the forest.

In particular, the artist focuses on the “bridal veil” fungus, captivated by its ethereal and intricate form. Encountered only once in its natural habitat, this fungus left a lasting impression due to the delicacy of its structure and the elegance of its presence.

The installation features three elements that replicate the shape of the fungus, crafted from braided jute rope and red clay. The intention is twofold: to make visible what is normally hidden and to celebrate the quiet beauty of an often underestimated organism.

The artwork invites visitors to look closely, to slow down, and to recognize the importance of the natural microworld, which sustains life and produces the oxygen we breathe. It is a tribute to the fragility and resilience of nature.
