THE ODYSSEY PORTAL
FRED MARTIN – 2026
At the entrance to the woods stands a monumental figure woven from hazel and willow branches, inviting visitors to pass through the wide-open mouth of a one-eyed giant. The artwork recalls Polyphemus, the famous Cyclops from the Odyssey, a symbol of nature’s primordial force and the boundary between civilization and the wild. His single eye evokes the contrast between knowledge and ignorance, power and fragility, fear and the desire for discovery.
To cross the threshold, adults must slightly lower their heads—a simple gesture that becomes a symbolic bow to nature and an invitation to humility. The Cyclops is no longer the monster that imprisons and threatens, but the guardian of a passage toward the unknown, exploration, and personal transformation. Crafted from plant materials destined to change with the seasons, The Odyssey Portal marks the beginning of a symbolic journey between myth and reality, ancient memory, and a contemporary experience of the forest.
